This early landscape by George Rodrigue, like many of his landscapes, features the oak tree as a defining characteristic of Louisiana. But this painting gives equal attention to the land or ground through Rodrigue’s inclusion of a coulee or path through the middle of the painting. The lushness of the land is conveyed through Rodrigue’s textured brushstrokes. Rodrigue balances the darkness of the land and trees with a warm light glowing from the oaks, in order to give viewers a sense of what Louisiana feels like.
