George Rodrigue: Venice

George Rodrigue’s artworks are featured at the European Cultural Centre’s Personal Structures exhibit during this year’s Venice Art Biennale. Explore twelve pieces spanning Rodrigue’s illustrious career at the Palazzo Bembo. Personal Structures is the biennial contemporary art exhibition organized and hosted by the European Cultural Centre in Venice, Italy.

Rodrigue: Before the Blue Dog

Before George Rodrigue’s Blue Dog paintings catapulted him to international fame, the artist
was already known for his dark, often ghostly, depictions of the Cajun landscape, culture, and
people. While his artistic vision was undeniably unique, Rodrigue’s interest in his Cajun roots was part
of the Cajun Revival, a broader cultural movement that began in the 1960s. This revival not only
increased ethnic pride among Cajuns but also inspired a new interest in Acadian food, music, and
culture outside the region. Rodrigue: Before the Blue Dog explores how the artist’s work
reflected and advanced this movement.

Rodrigue’s Artist Studio Re-Creation and the George Rodrigue Park Featured in the Artist’s Home Town
The Bayou Teche Museum presents a re-creation of George Rodrigue’s Carmel, CA studio space, complete with the artist’s easel and unfinished painting, and the plywood floor, splattered with paint. Artifacts and memorabilia from his youth, including his Boy Scout days in New Iberia and early student work paintings from his private collection are included in the installation.
Additionally, the George Rodrigue Park adjacent to the museum features a three-sided Blue Dog sculpture standing over six feet tall.
