The Blue Dog head is the focal point of this simple, yet striking painting. Rodrigue often said, “you can’t take a Blue Dog from one painting and put it into another…the colors won’t work.” Painted in 1993, Top Dog is now viewed as a precursor to the paintings created during the last three years of Rodrigue’s life, when he returned to these strong, contemporary images, allowing the image of the Blue Dog in large format to emphasize his interest in shape, color, design and contrast.
