Gallery Edition II: Untitled “S” Series Mixed Media
1990 by George Rodrigue
28 x 25 inches
Acrylic paint and silkscreen ink on paper
Location: New Orleans
One of Rodrigue’s earliest silkscreens, Gallery Edition II was produced by master printer, Edmond de Boisblanc of Lafayette, Louisiana. This exceptional and rare print was the beginning of the entire Blue Dog silkscreen saga. While the edition of this print was 90, the artist had several prints outside the edition that he hand-embellished with ties, sunglasses, eyelashes and eyebrows, a sheriff’s badge and gun, and other whimsical embellishments. While the exact number of these one-of-a-kind embellished works is unknown, the number is quite low, and likely less than ten.
After printing some of these early silkscreens, I decided to paint onto a few of them. These pieces were the first of my mixed media editions, and they expanded the horizon of what I could do with a silkscreen print. — G.R. from the book George Rodrigue Prints: A Catalogue Raisonné, published by Harry N. Abrams, NY. 2008 p. 38
