Fred and Lucy, designed in 2010 by George Rodrigue, is a newly released print in 2025. This Estate Edition of 150 measures 20 x 24 inches and is available for purchase from Rodrigue Studios or online.Based on a 2010 painting, this newly released estate stamped print encapsulates some of the essential elements of George Rodrigue’s work. The work depicts two Blue Dogs in a landscape, a familiar setting for Rodrigue’s work. Fred and Lucy also highlights Rodrigue’s affinity for color. In the painting Rodrigue used variations of cool toned colors to create this lush scene. The ground contains both light and dark shades of green, the sky’s different shades of blue give the viewer an opportunity to consider the landscape’s light source, and the two Blue Dogs are done in different shades of blue adding to the work’s visual appeal. Those painted details have been thoughtfully rendered in this silkscreen print.
The work’s title, Fred and Lucy, could be a reference to characters from the beloved television show I Love Lucy. Fred and Ethel Mertz were the best friends of the titular Lucille Ball and her husband Desi Arnaz. Perhaps the two dogs in this print are different colors because Fred and Lucy were not a couple. Rodrigue often referenced elements of American popular culture in his work, especially popular culture created during the mid 20th century. In his printwork he’s referenced figures like Marilyn Monroe and Gary Cooper, alluding to Lucille Ball would fit well within that aspect of Rodrigue’s style.
