For years George Rodrigue worked on a design for a blue dog sculpture. Creating a three dimensional sculpture of an image that had, originally, only existed in two dimensions proved challenging. Rodrigue wanted to ensure that the dog maintained its signature shape. After years of experimenting, he eventually landed on a three sided sculpture. Each side would show the front of the dog with no backside.
Once Rodrigue figured out the sculpture design he started exploring other ways to incorporate the three dimensional dog into his work. Around the time he opened his flagship gallery on Royal Street in New Orleans, Rodrigue created two small editions of blue dog tables. Each table features a three dimensional blue dog made out of aluminum. This particular table, newly available, features red, yellow, and blue decals on each side. Each side of the table features embellishments from the artist’s hand. The yellow side of the table is embellished with dashes of acrylic paint above and below the dog’s eyes, the blue side features a subtle, silver outline around the black swathes above and below the dog’s eyes, and the red side includes subtle silver outlines around the dog’s inner ear and eyes. The artist hand signed the table’s blue side. This is a unique opportunity to own a functional work of art that represents the culmination of years of Rodrigue’s commitment to solving the problem of how to depict the blue dog in three dimensions.
George Rodrigue originally created this table as an exclusive auction item for the Emeril Lagasse Foundation’s Carnival du Vin fundraiser, the table has been in a private collection since 2010. In keeping with the charitable purpose of the table, the owner has graciously donated it to the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts, and Rodrigue Studios has waived its consignment fee for this special piece so that all proceeds from the sale go to benefit GRFA’s mission of arts in education.
