Produced by WLAE-TV New Orleans (6th Street Studios) in association with O’Malley Productions, this intimate, career-spanning documentary is the first-ever film to explore the remarkable life and artistic journey of George Rodrigue — the Cajun artist who transformed Louisiana folklore and a mysterious loup-garou into the world-famous Blue Dog.
The News & Documentary Emmy Awards represent one of the highest honors in television nonfiction storytelling. While the main categories focus on programs with broad national reach, the Outstanding Regional Documentary category specifically celebrates outstanding work created for local and regional audiences — stories deeply rooted in community, culture, and place.
Being selected as one of just five nominees nationwide in this competitive category is a significant achievement. It brings national recognition to George’s powerful story of resilience: from being bedridden with polio as a child and teaching himself to paint, through his deep connection to Cajun culture, his response to Hurricane Katrina, and his rise to international pop art fame.
This nomination is a beautiful continuation of the film’s growing list of honors and a testament to the enduring legacy of George Rodrigue’s art and vision.
“Blue” first earned the 2025 Suncoast Regional Emmy Award for Cultural Documentary, presented in December 2025 at the Suncoast Emmy Awards ceremony in Hollywood, Florida.
Regional Emmy wins like this serve as the gateway for consideration in the national News & Documentary Emmy competition. Not every regional documentary automatically advances — only the strongest entries from across the various NATAS chapters are submitted and then judged at the national level. The fact that “Blue” was chosen as a nominee speaks volumes about its storytelling excellence, emotional depth, and cultural importance.
Only a handful of regional documentaries receive a national News & Documentary Emmy nomination each year. With thousands of submissions across all categories, earning one of the five spots in Outstanding Regional Documentary places “Blue” among an elite group of standout nonfiction works.
This recognition highlights not only the quality of the filmmaking but also the universal appeal of George’s story — one that resonates far beyond Louisiana while remaining proudly rooted in it.
The winners in the documentary categories will be announced during the 47th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City. The ceremony will be streamed live.
