It was in 1991 that GEORGE RODRIGUE opened his Galerie Blue Dog in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. This one-square mile quaint village includes numerous cottages, restaurants, shops and art galleries, all descending westward towards the stunning beach and the Pacific Ocean.
Although the California coast captured Rodrigue’s attention during his art school days at The Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, it is primarily the Gulf Coast beaches that dominate his artwork. As a child in the 1950s Rodrigue vacationed with his family along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and as an adult he frequented the Florida Panhandle with his wife Wendy. Together, they made repeated visits to Northwest Florida teaming up with the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation for lectures, school visits and workshops benefitting arts in education throughout the area.
