Rodrigue often used his art to express his personal feelings and view of the world. In the case of Are You Trying to Get on My Good Side?, the expression is complex.
One of Rodrigue’s first paintings after his return to New Orleans from Houston and three months of cancer treatments, the artist reveals in this poignant work his changing views. His disease reminded him to slow down and smell the flowers. Soon after this painting, he retreated a great deal from public life, spending more time in his Carmel, California home, both at his easel and with close friends and family.
