In 2001, George Rodrigue traveled with Don Sanders to Seattle, Washington to the studio of Dale Chihuly, where Rodrigue saw for the first time the glass artist’s paintings based on his famous glass baskets. Soon after, Rodrigue painted this large piece to fill a space in his home in Carmel, California. Influenced by Chihuly’s glasswork and paintings, he considered this piece in a similar manner — as a sort of stained glass, translucent close-up of the Blue Dog’s face.
