Life is Like a Light Bulb

Life is a Light Bulb, 2010, acrylic on canvas board, 24×18 inches

People often asked Rodrigue if he grew tired of painting the Blue Dog. He replied that, to the contrary, the challenge lies in continuing to paint the dog-shape and keep it interesting to him. This approach includes not only variations in design, color, and additional subjects, but also variations in brush stroke, even within the boundaries of one canvas.

In Life is a Light Bulb, Rodrigue paints the dog using a tight, almost surreal perfection. He surrounds the dog-shape, however, with loose, rough, and seemingly haphazard brushstrokes. Yet somehow, the finished painting is purposeful and locked in. Just like the Cajuns in his early paintings, the Blue Dog cannot move, lest it spoil the composition.
