George Rodrigue visited the beach for the first time in the summer of 1957 in Biloxi, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where he and his family spent a great deal of time when he was young. \u00a0This silkscreen expands on Rodrigue\u2019s memories of family trips to the Florida and Mississippi Gulf Coast. \u00a0Sit in Your Own Chair<\/i>\u00a0highlights a row of brightly colored Adirondack chairs, each one most likely assigned to a particular family member, (as designated by\u00a0the\u00a0matching dog) for which he or she was responsible for set up and removal.<\/p>\n

As legend has it, the Adirondack chair originated in 1903 in New York State\u2019s Adirondack forest preserve. \u00a0It was first conceived by Thomas Lee, a man wanting to construct a truly comfortable lawn chair to furnish his summer home. \u00a0But, this chair with its signature slanted back, wide armrests and low-to-the ground seating, has made it a very popular chair for the beach.<\/p>\n
