{"id":6207,"date":"2017-01-16T12:42:46","date_gmt":"2017-01-16T18:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/?p=6207"},"modified":"2023-03-16T15:48:06","modified_gmt":"2023-03-16T20:48:06","slug":"rodrigues-artist-studio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/rodrigues-artist-studio\/","title":{"rendered":"Rodrigue&#8217;s Artist Studio and\u00a0The George Rodrigue Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Bayou Teche Museum, New Iberia, LA<br \/>\n131 East Main Street<br \/>\nNew Iberia, LA<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6216\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/carmelstudio-225x300.png\" alt=\"carmelstudio\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/carmelstudio-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/carmelstudio.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>George Rodrigue (1944-2013) built his artist studio in the hills of Carmel Valley, California, in 2001.\u00a0 It was the first and only studio he built from the ground up, having previously adopted attics, spare bedrooms, and storage sheds to inexpensively suit his needs.\u00a0 Wide windows opened to a peaceful view of the property\u2019s lace oaks, trees that drip with pale green moss and reminded Rodrigue of home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Soon after the studio\u2019s completion, a Los Angeles reporter visited Rodrigue and interviewed him.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rodrigue sat at his easel and chair, now installed here in this exhibition, when the reporter asked, \u201cNow that you live in California, will you paint the beach, or maybe the lone cypress?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhy would I do that?\u201d replied the artist, clearly surprised by the question.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cMy landscape is in <i>here<\/i>,\u201d he continued, placing his hand on his heart.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cAnd that\u2019s Louisiana.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Yet it was here in this central California studio that Rodrigue painted the entire abstract Hurricane Series of seventy paintings between 2000 and 2003, and where he painted <i>God Bless America,<\/i> his outpouring of grief following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, for almost fourteen years this is where Rodrigue did the majority of his painting, including not only Blue Dogs, but also portraits, landscapes, and an ambitious return to painting the nude female figure&#8212; a series he called <i>Bodies<\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6217 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/studioinstallone-251x300.png\" alt=\"studioinstallone\" width=\"250\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/studioinstallone-251x300.png 251w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/studioinstallone-600x717.png 600w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/studioinstallone-624x745.png 624w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/studioinstallone.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>This studio space reflects the passion and spirit of the artist, including 1950s vintage furniture, memorabilia from past Mardi Gras celebrations, paintings from his childhood in New Iberia and art school in Los Angeles, along with quirky items he acquired \u201con the road,\u201d during his frequent cross-country drives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The intimate studio re-creation presented here is just a sampling of the full artist\u2019s workspace.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Plans are underway for a larger, more complete studio to be unveiled in a permanent gallery space within the <a href=\"http:\/\/bayoutechemuseum.org\/\">Bayou Teche Museum<\/a> at a later date.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The paint-splattered plywood floor was carefully dismantled from Rodrigue\u2019s Carmel Studio, as were his custom-made cabinets designed to hold his tubes of paint&#8212; all reassembled in this exhibition space.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The easel still holds the unfinished painting he was working on when he left Carmel, California for Houston, Texas on October 30, 2013.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sadly, Rodrigue would never paint again.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2828\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_0547-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0547\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_0547-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_0547.jpg 422w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/>Around the exhibition space are artifacts and memorabilia from<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rodrigue\u2019s youth, including his Boy Scout days in New Iberia, as well as early student work from his Saturday classes with Mrs. Keane&#8212; items that served as inspiration and motivation for the artist.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In 1962, Rodrigue enrolled at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now UL Lafayette), where he took only art classes, showing no interest in pursuing a degree. After only four semesters he applied and was accepted to The Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles (now located in Pasadena), where he became the first undergraduate student ever to be accepted at the renowned graduate school, and where he learned from professional artists, such as Lorser Feitelson, famous for his paintings within the non-objective, hard-edge movement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2827 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_0819-300x298.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0819\" width=\"250\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_0819-300x298.jpg 300w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_0819-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_0819.jpg 482w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>In addition to hosting acclaimed artists as guest teachers, Art Center was known for graphic illustration, advertising design, and automotive design &#8212;all of which appealed to Rodrigue.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>While a student, he created mock album covers for movie soundtracks, including \u201cHigh Noon\u201d, seen hanging on the walls in this installation, and created short films, designed brochures. and produced advertising illustrations to sell household appliances.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Reflecting on his student years, Rodrigue admitted, \u201cI was never the best draftsman in class.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But I always had the best ideas.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It was also while at Art Center that Rodrigue first visited Carmel-by-the-Sea, a quaint artist\u2019s community on the California Coast.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The experience had a profound, romantic effect on the young artist; and in 1991, he realized his dream and opened a gallery of his work in the seaside town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6218\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/studioinstalltwo-225x300.png\" alt=\"studioinstalltwo\" width=\"250\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/studioinstalltwo-225x300.png 225w, 624w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/studioinstalltwo.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Rodrigue\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/early-years-art-school\/\">student art<\/a> is part of this installation because the pieces inspired him throughout his life, hanging on the walls of not only his California studio, but also in Lafayette and New Orleans for nearly fifty years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Throughout high school, his childhood projects, also within this installation, hung on the walls of his attic studio in his family\u2019s home on St. Peters Street in New Iberia.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rodrigue would move these early pieces himself, hanging them on the walls of subsequent studios for the rest of his life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Rodrigue\u2019s widow, Wendy, and his sons, Andr\u00e9 and Jacques, are pleased to return these works to the town where they were painted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cLouisiana, and especially New Iberia, was George\u2019s heart,\u201d explains Wendy Rodrigue.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cHis studio belongs here; and we are deeply grateful to the Bayou Teche Museum and the citizens of New Iberia for welcoming him home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, in 2022, the museum opened the much-anticipated George Rodrigue Park adjacent to their building featuring a three-sided Blue Dog sculpture standing over six feet tall.<\/p>\n<p>This pocket park celebrates Rodrigue&#8217;s long career as a gifted artist, community leader, arts advocate and philanthropist.<\/p>\n<p><img
