The installation spans forty years, with subjects ranging from horse racing to football, as well as portraits of baseball&#8217;s Ron Guidry, basketball&#8217;s Bob Pettit, and <em>The Spirit of the Next Hero<\/em> (1985), featuring past Olympic gold medalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A print by George Rodrigue features the Blue Dog with Saints Quarterback Drew Brees. This special edition of 250, off the market since 2007, is signed by Rodrigue and Brees, and available only during this exhibition. Proceeds benefit the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts, a non-profit organization advocation the arts in education.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">One does not need to be a \u201csports fan\u201d in the conventional definition of the phrase to appreciate camaraderie and the sense of team spirit that accompany sporting and gaming activities. <\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">George Rodrigue was a staunch supporter of his alma mater UL\u2019s Ragin\u2019 Cajuns, known during his Lafayette school years as USL, and earlier as the Southwestern Louisiana Institute (or SLI), represented in this exhibition within paintings of baseball and women\u2019s basketball based on early team photographs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5086 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Image-19-2-266x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Image 19\" width=\"230\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Image-19-2-266x300.jpeg 266w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Image-19-2.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/>Rodrigue often cited LSU football\u2019s national championships in 1958, 2003 and 2007, together with the Saints\u2019 Super Bowl victory in 2010 as the greatest sports moments during his lifetime &#8212; a sentiment shared by many Louisianians. For LSU, Rodrigue used his artwork to raise $1 million towards constructing a new habitat for the team\u2019s mascot, Mike the Tiger.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he partnered with the New Orleans Saints and Quarterback Drew Brees, whose portrait is included in this exhibition, to raise millions of dollars for Gulf Coast humanitarian relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5081\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/National-Sports-Festival-VI-small-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"National Sports Festival VI small\" width=\"206\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/National-Sports-Festival-VI-small-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/National-Sports-Festival-VI-small.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/>Later this summer, the eyes of the world will be looking to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the Games of the XXXI Olympiad.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At that time, our nation will come together and cheer on our Team USA, united not by individual schools or states, but celebrating a national pride that only the Olympic games can foster. Rodrigue\u2019s large-scale painting, <i>Spirit of the Next Hero<\/i> (1985) honors past Olympic Gold Medalists while romanticizing the spirit of the next Olympian, which he portrays as a confident female athlete.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI\u2019m a na\u00efve surrealist,\u201d noted Rodrigue, defending his design.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI\u2019m not a sports artist.\u201d &#8212; an important distinction while considering the forty-year span of paintings highlighted in this exhibition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> Growing up in New Iberia, Louisiana, gaming and sporting events were part of everyday life for Rodrigue.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Whether pigeon racing, rooster fights (illegal in Louisiana since 2007), duck hunting, bourr\u00e9 card games, or traditional team sports such as baseball, basketball and football &#8212; all were deeply embedded in the Cajun culture.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As a young boy, Rodrigue attended \u201cmatch races\u201d in Abbeville, where horses and jockeys were pitted against each other.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many of these races were \u201cclaiming races\u201d &#8212; where if you won the race, you also won your opponent\u2019s horse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5083 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Image-1-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"Image 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Image-1-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Image-1-600x450.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Image-1-624x468.jpeg 624w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Image-1.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>From the early days of his career and throughout his life, George Rodrigue was a painter of his beloved Louisiana.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He portrayed the disappearing Cajun culture in a contemporary way.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He painted characters of the past who still exist today, and like their ancestors, enthusiastically embrace their sporting traditions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Drawn from numerous private and public collections, this exhibition honors the tradition of sports and gaming in Louisiana, and pays tribute to George Rodrigue\u2019s lifelong love of the spirit of the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201cOne man brushes many lives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The bigger the man, the wider the brush.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>That was certainly true of George Rodrigue\u201d. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><i> &#8212; <\/i>Hall of Fame baseball pitcher, Nolan Ryan<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Rodrigue: The Sanders Collection <\/i>(2015)<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spirit of the Game May 18- September 18, 2016 Rodrigue Studio 730 Royal Street New Orleans, LA This special exhibition celebrates George Rodrigue&#8217;s love of sports and includes original artwork borrowed form private collectors.
