Also on view is <\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Rodrigue&#8217;s Dressed to Kill<\/em><\/span><i> (1992), an early sculpture.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b style=\"line-height: 1.71429; font-size: 1rem;\">Lacoste Lineup<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.71429; font-size: 1rem;\"> (1991)<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">By George Rodrigue<br \/>\nOil on canvas<br \/>\n36&#215;82 inches<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a style=\"line-height: 1.71429; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/lacostelineup2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4450\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/lacostelineup2-300x133.png\" alt=\"lacostelineup2\" width=\"300\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/lacostelineup2-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/lacostelineup2-600x265.png 600w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/lacostelineup2-730x323.png 730w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/lacostelineup2-624x276.png 624w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/lacostelineup2.png 928w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the summer of 1991, George Rodrigue rented a commercial space in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Downtown rental property was at a premium and rarely available, and Rodrigue required City Council approval to convert the former dentist\u2019s office into an art gallery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The narrow, deep space seemed at first awkward for Galerie Blue Dog, and it relied primarily on artificial light.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Its only window stretched 82 inches across, facing 6<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Avenue, one block behind the main drag of Ocean Avenue.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Attracting attention would be difficult &#8212; especially that of art enthusiasts who might merely glimpse Rodrigue\u2019s gallery from the corner as they walked to the well-known Ocean Avenue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rodrigue stretched two canvases the exact width of the window, allowing space for a small display underneath. Facing inside, he painted a moonscape, with two dogs staring across the long gallery, from above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Facing outside, he painted <i>Lacoste Lineup<\/i>, his first artwork created in California since his student projects at the Art Center College of Design in 1960s Los Angeles.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With its five Blue Dogs, Oak Trees, Swirling Suns, and Alligator, the painting announced a Cajun\u2019s return to the West Coast, and the fulfillment of a dream he sought since Art School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Today, Rodrigue Studio Carmel occupies a brightly lit location on busy Dolores Street near the corner of Ocean Avenue.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rodrigue continued to paint for the gallery and its windows, but with more flexibility in the larger space.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>By 2000, he owned a home in nearby Carmel Valley and painted most of his artwork, whether for Carmel or New Orleans, in his studio there, preferring the quiet inspiration of the Santa Lucia Mountains to the hectic pace of his first white alligators ever recorded, when they were found by chance in the Louisiana swamps.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Louisiana Land and Exploration Company discovered the 9-inch babies in their nest, rescuing them before predators took notice of the glowing animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now full-grown and on view at several habitats across the United States, including the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, the alligators are not albinos, but rather have a rare genetic condition called leucism.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their piercing blue eyes contribute to their exotic appearance and mystique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rodrigue, like many, was fascinated by this remarkable discovery and viewed the alligators often, eventually painting <i>Spooked by Bourr\u00e9<\/i> in 1991 &#8212; his only painting ever of a white alligator.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He called the alligator in his painting Bourr\u00e9 after one of the young white alligators named after the popular Cajun card game and now living in a south Florida zoo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rodrigue painted this mysteriously-colored alligator and its Florida palm tree alongside his own mysteriously-colored Blue Dog and his Louisiana live oak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>(Sadly, Spots, one of the original hatchlings who lived at the Audubon Aquarium since 1990, and a brother to Bourr\u00e9, passed away at the painted it in 1984, George Rodrigue explored the concept of a sculptural Blue Dog.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, the nature of the dog is two-dimensional and without a backside.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is a static image, without movement or volume.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The more he worked with the shape, the tighter the dog became.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Throughout, its mystery revealed itself through its painted surroundings, its saucer-like unnatural eyes, and subtle changes in color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Dressed to Kill<\/i> is among Rodrigue\u2019s earliest Blue Dog sculptures and is one of only a handful created in wood.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rodrigue commissioned master woodworker John Shiell to carve the dog and its stand in mahogany from Rodrigue\u2019s original designs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He then painted the wood &#8212;-one of his last pieces created in oil paint before his health required a permanent switch to acrylic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By the early 1990s, Rodrigue began thinking of the Blue Dog less as the <i>loup-garou<\/i> or Tiffany and more as an entity on its own.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It could be male or female, oftentimes suggesting the artist himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This early sculpture was eventually replaced by large-scale three-dimensional works on chrome, such as the revolving artwork in Rodrigue Studio\u2019s Royal Street window, and the ones located permanently on Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie, Louisiana, and in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Read and see more about Rodrigue\u2019s
