When George Rodrigue began incorporating people into his landscape paintings in the early 1970s, he often painted historical scenes showing how Cajuns made a home for themselves in America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This painting, Early Military Cadre<\/em>, speaks to the role military service plays in establishing national identity.
