In Virtual Reality<\/i>, George Rodrigue combines several visual motifs to depict important aspects of his Cajun heritage. The central figure in the scene is Evangeline, the heroine in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow\u2019s epic 1847 poem titled Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie<\/i>. Longfellow\u2019s poem followed the path of the Cajun people from Nova Scotia to the swamps of Louisiana. Rodrigue painted Evangeline throughout his career, from the 1970s, with more traditional portraits, to more modern depictions like the Evangeline in Virtual Reality.<\/i><\/p>\n

Rodrigue includes oak trees and a swirling sky in the landscape behind Evangeline, two visual elements he often used in his depictions of the Louisiana landscape. The swirling sky, like the three candles in the painting\u2019s foreground, represents the passage of time and energy of life. Finally, Rodrigue painted three blue dogs alongside these other elements. Rodrigue\u2019s blue dog originated in stories of the loup-garou, a fictional Cajun werewolf, a creature his mother used to warn him about as a child. In Virtual Reality<\/i>, Rodrigue elegantly demonstrates the enduring power of Cajun culture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
