Rodrigue painted\u00a0Three Coins\u00a0in the Fountain<\/i>\u00a0in the summer of 2003 in his Carmel, CA, home\u00a0following a trip to Italy.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0triptych was inspired by the 1954 romantic comedy,\u00a0which featured the\u00a0three stars of the film each throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain in Rome.\u00a0\u00a0Frank Sinatra famously sang the title\u00a0song for the film with the lyrics:<\/p>\n

Three\u00a0coins in the fountain, each one\u00a0seeking happiness. Thrown by three hopeful lovers, which one will the fountain\u00a0bless? . . .\u00a0Just one wish will be granted.\u00a0One heart will wear a\u00a0valentine. Make it mine!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Typical to Rodrigue\u2019s process, he used references from\u00a0popular culture to title his work in order to bestow his vision with deeper\u00a0layers of meaning. \u00a0In most of these pieces,\u00a0Rodrigue presented the Blue\u00a0Dog asking the eternal, ever-present questions common to all people such as, \u201cWhy am I\u00a0here?\u201d and \u201cWhere am I going?\u201d However, here we see the\u00a0shape and\u00a0color of Rodrigue\u2019s iconic Blue Dog, set on three different, strongly-colored\u00a0backgrounds of red, purple, and yellow specifically each asking that question common\u00a0to\u00a0all dreamers, \u201cWill my wish be granted?\u201d<\/p>\n
