Born <\/b><\/span>on March 13<\/span>th<\/sup><\/span> in New Iberia, Louisiana, to George Rodrigue, Sr., a brick-layer, and Marie Courr\u00e9ge Rodrigue.\u00a0 <\/span>Remains an only child.<\/span><\/p>\n

1950-1970<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Diagnosed with <\/span>polio<\/b><\/span> in the third grade, and <\/span>discovers painting<\/b><\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Following a full recovery, embarks on his life\u2019s journey as an artist.\u00a0 <\/span>Studies art at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, followed by the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles.\u00a0 <\/span>Returns from California to Louisiana, where he photographs and paints the <\/span>mystical local landscape<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

1970-1980<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Solo exhibition at the Louisiana Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge.\u00a0 <\/span>Incorporates the <\/span>Cajun people<\/b><\/span>, traditions, and mythology into his landscapes.\u00a0 <\/span>Receives a Gold Medal from the Academy of Literature, Arts, and Science in Rome, and a prestigious Honorable Mention from Le Salon des Artistes in Paris, prompting the French newspaper Le Figaro<\/i> to name him \u201c<\/span>America\u2019s Rousseau<\/b><\/span>.\u201d The Cajuns of George Rodrigue<\/i> (Oxmoor House) is the first book published nationally on the Cajun culture and, at the suggestion of the National Endowment for the Arts, becomes an <\/span>official Gift of State<\/b><\/span> for the Carter White House.<\/span><\/p>\n

1980-1990<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Paints the loup-garou<\/i>, his <\/span>first Blue Dog<\/b><\/span> painting, as part of a collection of ghost stories (Bayou<\/i>, Inkwell Press).\u00a0 <\/span>Commissioned by the Republican Party to paint <\/span>Presidents Ronald Reagan<\/b><\/span> and <\/span>George H.W. Bush<\/b><\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>At the request of First Lady Nancy Reagan, paints three wooden eggs, now in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution, for the White House Easter Egg Roll.\u00a0 <\/span>The Rodrigue Gallery of <\/span>New Orleans<\/b><\/span> opens in the French Quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n

1990-2000<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Paints Absolut Rodrigue<\/i> and Absolut Louisiana<\/i> as part of the worldwide \u201c<\/span>Absolut Art<\/b><\/span>\u201d campaign created by Andy Warhol and Michel Roux for Absolut Vodka.\u00a0 <\/span>Book Blue Dog<\/i> (Viking Penguin) sells 200,000 copies worldwide.\u00a0 <\/span>Paints Louis Armstrong, Pete Fountain, and Al Hirt as official posters for the <\/span>New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival<\/b><\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Commissioned by the Democratic Party to paint <\/span>President Bill Clinton<\/b><\/span> and <\/span>Vice President Al Gore<\/b><\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Paints three covers for Neiman Marcus\u2019s catalogue, THE BOOK<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>Publishes Blue Dog Man<\/i> (Stewart, Tabori & Chang), accompanied by a 50-city U.S. book tour.\u00a0 <\/span>Galerie Blue Dog opens in Carmel, California.<\/span><\/p>\n

Partners with the legendary ad firm Young & Rubicam to create a worldwide campaign for <\/span>Xerox Corporation<\/b><\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Raises $500,000 for the American Red Cross following <\/span>9\/11<\/b><\/span> and $2.7 million following <\/span>Hurricane Katrina<\/b><\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Monograph The Art of George Rodrigue<\/i> published by Harry N. Abrams, New York.\u00a0 <\/span>40-year career retrospectives at the <\/span>Dixon Museum<\/b><\/span> in Memphis, and the <\/span>New Orleans Museum of Art<\/b><\/span> break records at those locations for living artists or contemporary shows.\u00a0 <\/span>Awarded Honorary <\/span>Doctorate of Fine Arts<\/b><\/span> by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.<\/span><\/p>\n

2010-2013<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Establishes the <\/span>George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts<\/b><\/span>, advocating the importance of the arts in education.\u00a0 <\/span>Honored as a <\/span>Distinguished Eagle<\/b><\/span> by the National Boy Scouts of America.\u00a0 <\/span>Solo exhibitions at the LSU Museum of Art, the Acadiana Center for the Arts, and the Amarillo Museum of Art.\u00a0 <\/span>Serves as Honorary Chair for the Carmel Film Festival.\u00a0 <\/span>Receives the prestigious Opus Award from the <\/span>Ogden Museum of Southern Art<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
