{"id":13529,"date":"2021-05-08T11:05:17","date_gmt":"2021-05-08T16:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/?page_id=13529"},"modified":"2023-08-10T16:12:53","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T21:12:53","slug":"hurricane-series","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/hurricane-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Between 2002 and 2003, George Rodrigue painted seventy swirling <a href=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/art\/hurricanes\/\"><i>Hurricanes<\/i><\/a>, most on round canvases, creating a series that, as he explained, \u201cI have to paint until it\u2019s out of my system.\u201d \u00a0Now, for the first time since his passing in 2013, a selection of George Rodrigue\u2019s exceptional abstract series, <i>Hurricanes<\/i>, is available for sale, including his very first painting from the series&#8230;. <a href=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/art\/hurricanes\/#gallery-2\"><i>Lili<\/i> <\/a>(2002), as part of the special 2018 exhibition, <i>Rodrigue\u2019s Swirling Vision: \u00a0The Cosmos, Sun, and Hurricanes<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>I had forgotten what these hurricanes do. \u00a0I just really felt\u2026this energy and\u2026all of what happened to us during these hurricanes. \u00a0So, I decided that I\u2019m going to paint hurricanes &#8212; I\u2019m going to paint the feeling of a hurricane. \u00a0I\u2019m going to paint all the emotion\u2026and do it in an abstract way\u2026like, things are torn up and it\u2019s a little like a radar screen. \u00a0It\u2019s a little like things getting beat up. He watched as a colossal 150-year old oak tree fell in his front yard. \u00a0Two weeks later, Isidore tore through the same area, also visible during the day. \u00a0Viewing firsthand the energy and power of these storms affected Rodrigue in a way he had never experienced.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly the swirl, a signature motif that had appeared throughout his work, took on a new significance, telling a story of its own. \u00a0The spiraling vortex that once enlivened his Landscapes and Blue Dog paintings grew to encompass the entire canvas as its sole subject. Rodrigue\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/art\/hurricanes\/\"><i>Hurricanes<\/i><\/a>, however, are not a complete departure from his signature imagery. Within them exists traces of what came before&#8211; a river, an oak tree, the distinct eyes of a dog\u2014 in the same way life continues, yet changed, following an actual storm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/art\/hurricanes\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13531 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Hurricane-Room-Nola2-1024x449.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Hurricane-Room-Nola2-1024x449.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Hurricane-Room-Nola2-600x263.jpg 600w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Hurricane-Room-Nola2-300x132.jpg 300w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Hurricane-Room-Nola2-768x337.jpg 768w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Hurricane-Room-Nola2-1536x674.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Hurricane-Room-Nola2.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rodrigue\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/georgerodrigue.com\/art\/hurricanes\/\"><i>Hurricanes<\/i><\/a> pre-date Hurricane Katrina, and many people, in hindsight, have seen the series as a prophecy.
