Based on a photograph taken by George Rodrigue, Andre’ and Mr. Petro at Bat captures a warm moment between the artist’s son Andre’ and Bud Petro. Bud and his brother, Norman, owned the Esso gas station across the street from Rodrigue’s first Lafayette gallery on Jefferson Street which was also his home and studio. Over the years Rodrigue developed a close friendship with the Petro brothers who were the subject of several of his paintings.
To create this painting, Rodrigue had Bud Petro pose with Andre’ in the Rodrigues’ backyard. In the painting, Rodrigue replaced the real background with one of signature dark, cropped oak trees. Like many of his paintings of people, the resulting image is both a real and imagined depiction of life in Louisiana.
