Rodrigue had an admiration and fascination with trains his entire life. In a small series of works in 2010, he combined this love of the shiny locomotives with his iconic Blue Dog. As he had done earlier in his Bodies series, and Swamp Dog series, Rodrigue was experimenting with photography and printmaking, using his computer to combine the painted images with color and repetitive designs. Using the scanned images from his computer, he combined the painted images with photographs, creating what he described as ‘remastered digital prints’. He released a total of four prints in this series featuring trains and the Blue Dog, all in the small edition of 10, and a very limited number of Artist Proofs.

George Rodrigue was a Louisiana painter known for his depictions of the landscape and people of Acadiana, as well as his later Pop Art paintings featuring the figure of a blue dog. This painting, “Watchdog” from 1983, was the first ever painting in what would become known as the “Blue Dog” series.

In 2019, Rodrigue Studios celebrated its 30th Anniversary! In honor of the occasion the artist’s family worked with his original master printer, Edmond de Boisblanc of Lafayette, Louisiana, to reproduce four of Rodrigue’s earliest silkscreens.
These exceptional and rare prints have been sold out and unavailable for some 25 years. The ‘new’ editions are printed using Rodrigue’s original designs, reproduced to match the early prints, but with an added ‘30 Years’ reference (XXX 2019) and the official Rodrigue Estate Stamped Signature. In addition, Gallery Edition I is altered to reflect today’s Rodrigue Studio at 730 Royal Street, unlike the earlier version showing Rodrigue Gallery of New Orleans, Inc. at 721 Royal Street.

Celebrating the eclipse with George Rodrigue’s Moonstruck.
Over the years, George Rodrigue found himself frequently using some of the same motifs in his paintings and silkscreens. Flowers, hearts, swirls, eyes, candles…all were recurring designs found throughout his work, which changed In this late work, George Rodrigue renders the oak tree with the same rules he set for himself in the early 1970s — with hard edges and dissected at the top, so that the sky is small and defined by the irregular shapes formed by the branches. The Blue Dog stands as a focal point, reminiscent of the artist’s early loup-garou paintings, but here the Blue Dog is not within a dark and eery landscape, rather appears to glow beneath the bright moon, perhaps a bit “moonstruck” and optimistic for a brighter tomorrow.

Several of George Rodrigue’s prints feature his signature as a design element. Starting with exhibition and festival posters in the 1970s and 80s, Rodrigue would fill the white space beneath the image with a large version of his stylized signature. Rodrigue continued incorporating his signature as a vital design element when creating Blue Dog silkscreens in the 1990s. Rodrigue’s interest in turning his signature into a more compelling aspect of his print work stems from his schooling at the Art Center College of Design, which emphasized graphic design and advertising arts. In the print Signature Dog: Red, Rodrigue’s signature, like the Blue Dog, exists as a strong graphic symbol. The simplicity of this print shows Rodrigue’s ability to distill ideas down to their essential elements.

In this enchanting scene, five Blue Dogs drift through the air against the backdrop of a softly glowing moon. Their celestial surroundings lend an otherworldly charm to the scene, creating a sense of wonder and surrealism often present in Rodrigue works.
The early reproductions of Rodrigue’s Cajun paintings and early Blue Dog series were lithographic posters, using a four-color process, often mass-produced for special events in open, or large editions. Technology at the time didn’t allow for a more complicated image of the full spectrum of color. However, by the early 2000s, improvements in computer programming now allowed the artist and his printmakers to more easily separate colors in creating high-quality silkscreens. Rodrigue reproduced a handful of images that were originally Cajun lithograph posters as silkscreens during this time later in his career.
Home on the Moon was one of the very few early Blue Dog paintings ever reproduced as a lithograph poster. This new 2022 printing marks the first time one of the early images used in a Blue Dog lithograph has been reprinted as a true silkscreen in the tradition that Rodrigue embraced later in his career. The silkscreen release in an edition of 175 captures all the nuances of the range of tones of the figures from the original painting and is stamped with the artist’s proprietary Estate stamp.

Everyone that knew George Rodrigue knew him for his big laugh, larger than life personality and sense of humor. The creation of this Blue Chicken piece for his good friend Alfred Lamson (1918-2005) was no exception.
The running joke between Mr. Lamson and the artist was that he should paint a chicken because he was “barking up the wrong tree” with his Blue Dog series. So, on the ocassoin of his 80th birthday, Mr. Lamson received this surprise custom piece.

Regal Beagle demonstrates how the Blue Dog became a vehicle in George Rodrigue’s work to explore new modes of artistic expression. In this work, Rodrigue creates playful twists on familiar subject matter. This painting includes a tree, though it is not one of Rodrigue’s typical lush oaks. This tree is impossibly flat, with proportions that could only exist in one’s imagination. A long red cape conceals most of the Blue Dog. The cape could reference a magician’s costume, referencing the playful ways Rodrigue works images to surprise and delight viewers of his art.

These two silkscreen prints, Red Moon and Purple Moon, highlight key elements of George Rodrigue’s early printmaking process. When he began making silkscreen prints of the Blue Dog in the 1990s, Rodrigue created the works by sketching designs onto tracing paper. Each color had its own corresponding sheet of tracing paper, and those sheets were stacked atop one another to create the entire print image. Given this part of the process, the colors in these prints are flat, bold, and few. These prints capture the direct simplicity of Rodrigue’s early silkscreen works.
